2009 AVCA Division II National Coach of the Year
Jody Butera - University of Indianapolis
LEXINGTON, Ky. (December 11, 2009) - The American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) is proud to announce that University of Indianapolis head women's volleyball coach Jody Butera has been selected as the 2009 AVCA Division II National Coach of the Year.
In her 13th year as the Indianapolis mentor, Butera led her squad to a historic 2009 season. The Greyhounds captured their first-ever NCAA Division II Midwest Region title, advancing to the NCAA Division II Championships for the first time. Indianapolis, who entered the national quarterfinals riding a 24-match win streak, eventually succumbed to three-time national champion Concordia University-St. Paul, ending the team's storybook season with an impressive 38-2 overall record.
UIndy, under Butera's guidance, laid claim to only its second Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) championship in program history, putting together a 13-1 league mark. The Greyhounds began the season unranked in the AVCA Division II Coaches Top 25 Poll and steadily ascended the ranks, ending the year in the poll's No. 6 spot - the highest ranking in Indianapolis' history. In addition, the squad wrote program new records for single-season victories (38) and win percentage (.950).
Butera, the program's all-time wins leader, has compiled a 324-155 record since she stepped foot on the Indianapolis campus. The Greyhounds' taskmaster has directed the team to 11 straight winning seasons and picked up career-victory No. 300 on Sept. 12 against Northwest Missouri State University.
A 1993 graduate of Eastern Connecticut State, Butera was formerly the women's volleyball coach at Newbury Junior College in Brookline, Mass. She also was the boys' volleyball coach at Waltham (Mass.) High School., starting a new program in February of 1997. In 1995-96, Butera was an athletic compliance intern at Boston College, working with BC's 32 varsity sports. Prior to her stint at BC, Butera seved as an assistant volleyball coach at Springfield College (Mass.) from 1994-96. In 1993, Butera held the assistant volleyball post at her alma mater.
The AVCA will formally present Butera her awards at the 2009 jostens Coaches Honors Luncheon in Tampa, Fla., on Thursday, December 17. The luncheon is held in conjunction with the 2009 AVCA Annual Convention.
