U.S. SILICA CO. BEACH WHITE™ VOLLEYBALL SAND USED IN ABC’S
5/9/2011
Frederick, MD. (May 9, 2011): U.S. Silica Co. was selected to donate BEACH WHITE Volleyball Sand for
outdoor volleyball courts constructed in a recent episode of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition. The Emmy
award winning reality television program built a new home for a volleyball coach, who is the guardian of
three young sisters in Clay County, Florida. The episode aired Sunday, May 8th, 2011, from 8:00-9:00 p.m.,
ET on ABC.
For 25 years Carrie Prewitt has been a high school volleyball coach and mentor to her students. Not
surprisingly, when the parents of one of her students passed away, it was a natural fit for Carrie to
help both the girl, and her two younger sisters. Carrie became their permanent guardian and provided
them a stable, loving home. Carrie's small, run-down house however, could not accommodate the
growing family and was becoming unsafe to live in. Extreme Makeover: Home Edition heard of their
situation and built them a new structurally sound home in just seven days, complete with a sand
volleyball court in the back yard.
The sand court was fitting in that Prewitt, an accomplished volleyball coach, had been recognized by
the AVCA (American Volleyball Coaches Association) for her outstanding coaching record, receiving the
Victory Club award for her 400th win in 2008.
"It is wonderful that Extreme Makeover: Home Edition is able to provide support to such a deserving
family" said AVCA Executive Director, Kathy DeBoer, "and with Sand Volleyball becoming an NCAA
sport in spring 2012 for Division I and II, the sand court is an especially nice touch. Who better to put it
in than U.S. Silica, an AVCA partner, who has done extensive work to develop sand guidelines and has a
great reputation for community service."
U.S. Silica (USS) was selected to provide sand for the courts. USS is a leading producer of industrial
minerals, including high quality volleyball sand. U.S. Silica's long standing commitment to community
relations and expert knowledge of sand volleyball courts made it a perfect fit for this ExtremeMakeover: Home Edition project.
The Emmy award winning reality program "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition," now in its 8th season, is
produced by Endemol USA, a division of Endemol Holding. It's executive-produced by Brady Connell and
George Verschoor. David Goldberg is Chairman, Endemol North America. The show airs Sundays from
8:00-9:00 p.m., ET on ABC.
