III. Chair Reports (Cody)
1. AVCA Board of Directors Update:
Cody recently attended the AVCA Board of Directors meeting held in conjunction with the Spring Conferenc in Anaheim. He reported back to the HCC that awareness and education are huge. The addition of webinars and the Video Tip of the Week program has afforded numerous educational opportunities for the membership. A goal of the Board is to make the sport of volleyball attractive for tv. The casual fan and media don't really understand our sport. Conference networks key in growing covereage and support of volleyball nationwide. Other notes from the Board Meeting: A Division III Men's Rep was added to the Board. Retention of women coaches in the game will be a primary focus in the next year. The student membership category is beneficial and growing the membership in that area. Finally, the Mentor/Mentee program was a big success in its inaugural year, and the AVCA looks to add both more mentors and mentees to the program in the coming year.
2. 5/8 Preseason Hours:
Cody recently spoke with his FAR, and reported that it didn't sound far-fetched to them to add more non-physical preseason hours. Cody has created a document with the HCC's and other member's feedback and will forward that document along to the HCC, so that the process can begin to lobby for these extra hours.
3. Goals & Scores Survey:
The NCAA annual conducts a goals & scores survey with its student-athletes. Cody has found some very startling information in the results of the most recent study. For instance, less than 50% of student-athletes were happy that they chose their institution. Also, less than 39% trusted that their coach taught them in an ethical manner. Cody will forward these survey results to the committee and gather their feedback.
4. Rotation update:
Cody thanked those members of the HCC who are rotating off the committee for their time and dedication over the years. These members are: Stephanie Radecki, Kris Naber and Bren Stevens. Linda Bell was scheduled to rotate off, as well, but will stay on for another term. Cody then welcomed the new HCC reps to the committee. These members are: Allison Magner, Sarah Smith, Melissa Wolter, Lorelee Smith and Shellane Ogoshi.
V. Next Meeting
The next HCC call will be August 10 at 1 p.m. EST.
