2010 AVCA Division III Region Coaches of the Year

LEXINGTON, Ky. (November 11, 2010) - The following coaches have been selected by their regions as AVCA Region Coaches of the Year. Each of the honorees will represent his/her region on the AVCA National Coach of the Year ballot. The awards will be officially presented at the Jostens Coaches Honors Luncheon in Kansas City, Mo. on Thursday, Dec. 16, at the 2010 American Volleyball Coaches Association Annual Convention.

AVCA Division III Central Region Coach of the Year
Rich Luenemann, Washington University in St. Louis
2010 Record: 31-3, 8-3 University Athletic Association
Rich Luenemann takes home his third consecutive AVCA Central Region Coach of the Year award after leading the Bears to a 31-win season and another berth in the NCAA Tournament.  Earlier in the month after wins over Carnegie Mellon and Brandeis University in the UAA tournament, Luenemann became just the fifth coach in NCAA history to amass 1,000 career victories.  The No. 3-ranked Bears have played very well against the toughest national competition, posting a 9-2 record against teams ranked AVCA Division III Coaches Top 25 Poll.  They will face Beloit College in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Friday, Nov. 12.  Luenemann is in his twelfth season as the head coach of Washington-St. Louis, and this honor marks the sixth AVCA Division III Central Region Coach of the Year award for him (2000, 2003, 2005, 2008, 2009, 2010).

AVCA Division III Great Lakes Region Coach of the Year
Jason Miller, Heidelberg University
2010 Record: 32-5, 9-0 Ohio Athletic Conference
In his eleventh year at the helm of the Heidelberg University volleyball program, Jason Miller has guided his team to an unforgettable season with an undefeated conference record, leading the Berg to their third OAC regular season title, and the second under Miller's coaching. Miller's roster is full of talented athletes including five OAC All-Conference selections along with the three-time OAC Libero of the Year. Miller's squad set a new school record for matches won in a season with 32 wins this far in 2010, and he is the only coach in Heidelberg history to eclipse the 200-win milestone. This marks the first time that Miller has received AVCA Division III Great Lakes Region Coach of the Year honors.

AVCA Division III Mid-Atlantic Region Coach of the Year
Mark Birtwistle, Eastern University (Pa.)
2010 Record: 29-4, 7-0 Freedom Conference
In 21 seasons of direction at Eastern University (Pa.), Mark Birtwistle has established himself as one of the top coaches in the nation,  accumulating more than 450 victories.  He continued the success in 2010 by winning his 13th conference championship and clinching a spot in the NCAA Tournament, where his team will square off against Richard Stockton in the opening round.  Eastern began the season with a 15-match winning streak before losing to currently third-ranked Juniata on September 24. He also took home the Freedom Conference Coach of the Year award, and this marks the Eagles' third consecutive berth in the NCAA Tournament.   It also marks Birtwistle's third AVCA Division III Mid-Atlantic Region Coach of the Year Award (2002, 2005, 2010).

AVCA Division III Midwest Region Coach of the Year
Deb Schulman, University of Wisconsin-Platteville
2010 Record: 31-3, 6-2 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference
In her 23rd season as head coach of the University of Wisconsin-Platteville volleyball team, Deb Schulman has led the Pioneers to a season full of achievements and honors, including entering NCAA Division III tournament on a 19-game win streak. Schulman, with an overall record of 554-295, is ranked in the top 25 nationally for career wins and winning percentage among active coaches. Returning six starters from the 2009 season, Schulman improved the team tremendously from a 22-15 record last year to a current record of 31-3 with a current national ranking at spot No. 14 in the AVCA Division III Coaches Top 25 Poll. This is the second time Schulman has received AVCA Division III Midwest Region Coach of the Year honors, the first being in the 2004 season.

AVCA Division III New England Region Coach of the Year
Terry Condon, University of Massachusetts Boston
2010 Record: 27-4, 7-0 Little East Conference
UMass-Boston dominated conference play to win the Little East Conference and advance to the NCAA Tournament to play Maine Maritime in the regional quarterfinals.  In six seasons as head coach, Terry Condon has the most wins of any coach in the program's history, while posting the highest win percentage of any coach with over 25 games of experience at the Harbor Campus.  Condon led her Beacons to their third consecutive 25-plus win season and tied the school record with seven conference wins.  The Beacons held a No. 1 ranking in the NCAA Division III New England Women's Volleyball Association poll earlier in the year and are currently ranked 24th in the AVCA Division III Coaches Top 25 Poll.  This is Condon's second AVCA Division III New England Region Coach of the Year Award after winning it for the first time a season ago.

AVCA Division III New York Region Coach of the Year
Chris Pinto, New York University
2010 Record: 35-5, 9-2 University Athletic Association
In his first season at New York University as interim head coach, Chris Pinto has guided the Violets to a very successful season with an overall record of 35-5 and a University Athletic Association conference record of 9-2, with their only league losses coming to No. 1 ranked Emory and No.3 ranked Washington-St. Louis. Pinto has helped the team to four tournament wins in five attempts with a young lineup that includes two freshmen, three sophomores and two juniors. After being the assistant coach for the Violets in 2008 and 2009, Pinto, as head coach, led NYU to its first-ever UAA regular season title and has guided the squad to victories over four ranked opponents, which is the most since 2003. Being the only team that is nationally ranked in the New York region, Pinto and his squad enter NCAA regional play this weekend. This is the first time Pinto has earned AVCA Division III South Region Coach of the Year honors.

AVCA Division III South Region Coach of the Year
Lindsay Birch, Christopher Newport University
2010 Record: 35-2, 18-0 USA South
In her ninth season as head coach at Christopher Newport University, Lindsay Birch has continued to lead the Captains on an uphill path of success with an outstanding 35-2 overall record and an undefeated 18-0 record in the USA South Conference. She has guided CNU victories over four top-25 teams and 10 wins over regionally ranked teams. The Captains' current No. 5 national ranking is the highest in program history. Birch mentored the 2010 USA South Player of the Year and Libero of the Year while placing six players on all-conference squads. After guiding her team through its fourth straight USA South Championship, Birch and her squad head into NCAA regional play this weekend. A former CNU player herself, Birch is the winningest coach in the Captains' history. This is the first time Birch has earned AVCA Division III South Region Coach of the Year honors.

AVCA Division III West Region Coach of the Year
Kellee Roesel, California Lutheran University
2010 Record: 27-3, 14-0 Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference
After directing the Regals to the school's first Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tournament title, Kellee Roesel has been named the AVCA Division III West Region Coach of the Year.  Cal Lutheran, under Roesel's guidance, is currently riding a program-record 27-match winning streak, while also finishing the season with a perfect 14-0 conference record.  With their whitewashing of La Verne in the SCIAC tournament final, the Regals clinched an automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament, which begins for them on Friday, Nov. 12 with a match against Hardin-Simmons.  Of the 27 regular-season victories the squad racked up in 2010, only one of them was extended to five sets while 19 of them were sweeps.  Roesel is in her fifth season as the head coach of Cal Lutheran, and this honor marks her first-ever AVCA Division III West Region Coach of the Year Award.
