ROLL CALL
Absent from the call were John Patrick, Kanoe Brandy, Lisa Davis, Patty Harrison
Welcome
Sue welcomed everyone and noted that due to a couple of conflicts a number of committee members could not be on the call.
Tournament Guidelines
On the last call the committee discussed the need for a set of guidelines to be drawn up for tournaments. A number of two-year coaches have commented in the way that some tournaments have been conducted. The committee turned its attention to the issue and brainstormed the items that should be included in the guidelines. The committee came up with the following:
AVCA Two Year College Tournament Guidelines
Required format and/or event personnel:
1. Games are played to 30 points consistent with NCAA rules verses USAV 25 points or timed format.
2. Host institution provides both an up and down certified officials.
3. Host institution provides line judges.
4. Host institution provides an official scorekeeper with a book being kept and line ups being turned in.
5. Host institution provides a libero tracking person at the score table.
Suggested formats:
1. Match play be 3 out of 5 as often as possible, but specifically during semi-finals and finals of a tournament.
2. Limit 2 out of 3 match play format to pool play and consolation.
3. Limit the number of matches played back to back to 2 (3 out of 5's) or 3 (2 out of 3's) and limit the number of matches in a single day to 3 (3 out of 5's) or 4 (2 out of 3's).
This sheet would be drawn up and posted on avca.org for all of the coaches and schools to use as a guideline.
NCAA Clearing House Requirements
The committee discussed the new requirements for the clearing house. As it now stands, all athletes will be required to go through the clearing house not just international students. The committee feels that is important to let the student-athletes know that there is a $75 cost that is involved. The cost cannot be covered by a NJCAA institution. For now, if the student-athlete filed in high school, they will need to go through the update procedure. One good idea is to put the Clearing House topic in an "Orientation to College" type of class for students.
The committee suggested that this topic be covered at the AVCA Annual Convention. Sue indicated that she would work with AVCA staff to get this covered.
Awards
Kelly Stumph, AVCA Awards Manager, provided an update for the minutes. All coaches should be AVCA members by October 25 in order to nominate for postseason awards. Coach of the Year nominations are due Friday, November 17 and Region Coach of the Year honorees will be decided on Tuesday, November 28. Finally the National Coach of the Year will be determined on Tuesday, December 5. The Two-Year college awards packet will be emailed as well as posted on the internet on Oct. 12. If you have any questions, please contact Kelly Stumph by phone (859-219-3556) or email (kelly.stumph@avca.org )
Closing Comments
Todd mentioned that we needed to look at Facts on File publication for the future. Currently coaches are not submitting information for Facts on File and the new tracking service is indicating that it does not have a large readership.
Sue thanked everyone again for their participation on the call and noted that these minutes would be approved via email and then sent to the entire two-year membership.
Next conference call will be Wednesday, November 8, at 11:00 a.m. EDT.
