Susan Brewer and Jeff Carroll Named 2011 AVCA National High School Coaches of the Year

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Nov. 29, 2011) - The American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) is proud to announce that Susan Brewer, head girls' volleyball coach at Bellville High School in Bellville, Texas, and Jeff Carroll, head girls' volleyball coach at Billings Senior High School in Billings, Montana, have been selected as the 2011 AVCA National High School Coaches of the Year.

"By any measure, Susan Brewer and Jeff Carroll are two of the best coaches in the country," said AVCA Executive Director Kathy DeBoer. "The sustained excellence, the skill and character development and the love of the sport are all what is best about the coaching profession."

Brewer was hired to establish a volleyball program for the Bellville School district in 1977. It didn't take long for Brewer to have Bellville Brahmanette on the radar both locally and nationally. Under her guidance, Bellville has won over 800 games in the course of her 34 year career. In fact, Bellville has won or shared 29 consecutive district championships with Brewer at the helm. The Brahmanettes have played for the regional championship 20 times and have advanced to the Texas state championships 14 times - winning 9 titles and finishing as runner-up three times. Brewer has twice been recognized as the Texas Girls Coaches Association and coached in the TGCA All-Star Game on six occasions. In 2005, Brewer was named National Federation of High Schools Coach of the Year. Recently, she was named as a Top-15 University Interscholastic League sponsor for her ability to develop and refine their student's extracurricular activities. Over the course of her career, she has coached 4 Texas MVP's, 22 TGCA All-Stars and 45 All-State players.

Jeff Carroll has been the head coach at Billings Senior High School for the past 26 years. Over the course of his career, his teams have won 11 conference championships, nine state championships, and amassed five runners-up finishes. He has been named Coach of the Year in the state of Montana nine times, was named to the Montana Coaches Hall of Fame in 2009 and was selected as the NHSACA National Volleyball Coach of the Year in 2010.  He has an impressive overall record of 579-199, including posting a 30-4 record this past season.  He has served with the AVCA on the Publications Committee, as well as the High School All-America Selection Committee. He is a solid developer of character and skill, as evidenced by the nearly 70 former players that have gone on to play at the collegiate level, including 8 of them at Division I schools.

Brewer and Carroll were selected from an outstanding group of nominees, which included: Amber DeCoursey (Indiana), Danny Tullis (Louisiana), Greg Snipes (Ohio), Gwen Egbert (Nebraska), Candice Collins (Texas), Jason Ulrich (New Jersey), Kim Adams (Virginia), Kim Lauwer (Alaska), Kevin Murphy (Idaho), Nora Groft (South Dakota) and Ron Kordes (Kentucky).

The AVCA will formally present the National High School Coach of the Year awards to Brewer and Carroll at the 2011 Jostens Coaches Honors Luncheon in San Antonio, TX., on Thursday, December 16.  The luncheon is held in conjunction with the 2011 AVCA Annual Convention.

As a result of winning AVCA National Coach of the Year honors, Brewer and Carroll will lead Team East and Team West in the fourth annual Under Armour All-America Volleyball Match & Skills Competition, Saturday, December 18 at the Alamo Dome in San Antonio, TX.  Tickets for the Under Armour All-America Volleyball Match & Skills Competition are on sale now through Ticketmaster (
