The Southern Pacific Volleyball Committee has announced the inaugural Girls’ Interscholastic Beach Volleyball League. The eight-team league consisting of Los Angeles area schools will pioneer the start of interscholastic beach volleyball competition similar to the NCAA sand volleyball format, also beginning in the 2011-2012 spring season.

This spring sport will run from March through May and will be comprised of three doubles teams in dual match competition. The league will be played at centralized sites at Dockweiler State Beach and at the Annenberg Community Beach House in Santa Monica. California and Arizona have the only interscholastic leagues currently in place for beach (sand) volleyball. Local universites, Long Beach State, Loyola Marymount, Pepperdine and USC are also embarking on their inaugural season.

“Having specialized in junior beach volleyball competition for more than 20 years, we are looking forward to the upcoming season for our local high school athletes competing this season and providing an opportunity to participate in the newest NCAA sport.  - AAU Beach Volleyball Commissioner Gino Grajeda

The league will be comprised of squads from Carson, El Segundo, Harvard-Westlake, Marlborough, Marymount, Mira Costa, Palos Verdes and Valencia. Following league play will be a post-season championship playoffs where the top teams will qualify. Complete schedules are posted at www.aauclubbeach.com under the SCHEDULE tab. Although not an official CIF sport, the rules of play will be similar to the NCAA format and the season of sport will follow the CIF spring season of play.

“The birthplace of the sport took place right here on the beaches of Southern California, it is only fitting that we also inaugurate the first interscholastic beach volleyball league.” – AAU Beach Volleyball Commissioner, Gino Grajeda

The league is supported by the AAU National Executive Volleyball Committee and Championship Volleyball and operated by the Southern Pacific Volleyball Committee.
