No. 8 UC Irvine Defeats No. 11 Southern California In MPSF Play-In Match
Irvine, Calif. - Taylor Wilson came off the bench in game two to spark UC Irvine to a 3-2 (24-30, 30-26, 21-30, 30-25, 15-9) victory over USC in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Play-In match Wednesday at Crawford Court.
Wilson recorded 10 kills, a career-high four aces and four blocks to go with freshman Cory Yoder's team-high 17 kills and .517 hitting percentage. Wilson's 10 kills were the most by the junior since he had 19 versus USC on Jan. 25. Sophomore Cole Reinholm added 12 kills and opposite Jon Steller recorded eight kills. Aaron Harrell, Kevin Wynne and Jordan DuFault each had seven kills with Harrell totaling a match-high nine total blocks. Setter Anthony Spittle tallied 61 set assists and a career-best 10 digs. Libero Brent Asuka added nine digs in the victory.
USC's Juan Figueroa led all players with 22 kills. Murphy Troy recorded 16 kills while Andrew Vernon had 12 kills and Tri Bourne posted 11 kills and a match-high 15 digs. Setter Jimmy Killian totaled 63 set assists and eight total blocks. Hunter Current recorded eight kills and eight block assists. Libero Luke Morris popped up 12 digs.
It is only the second (2-5) five-game victory of the year for the seventh seed and eighth-ranked Anteaters who improve to 16-14 overall and advance to face second seed BYU Saturday (Apr. 19) in a quarterfinal match in Provo, UT. Eighth seed and 11th-ranked USC ends the season at 13-16 overall.
USC used four consecutive Anteater miscues to take a 14-10 lead in game one. UCI could not get closer than two the rest of the game as the Trojans took the set, 30-24. USC hit .393 and out-blocked UCI 4.5 to 1.
With the score tied 18-18 in game two, Taylor Wilson came off the bench and fired a service ace and forced an overpass that Aaron Harrell put away to give UCI the 20-18 advantage. USC would come within 22-21 on a UCI hitting error, but a Cole Reinholm kill started a 3-0 run to put UCI up 25-21. UCI would even out the games 1-1 with a 30-26 victory. Reinholm recorded six kills as the Anteaters hit .514 for the game.
UCI led 16-15 before USC scored four unanswered including two kills by Murphy Troy to take the 19-16 lead. The Trojans would cruise to the 30-21 win as UCI hit .086 in the set. Juan Figueroa added seven kills for USC.
After trailing 12-15, UCI rallied behind the serving of Jon Steller to take a 17-15 lead. The Anteaters would continue to lead 23-22 before kills by Kevin Wynn and Cory Yoder were followed by an ace by Steller to give UCI a 26-22 advantage. The Anteaters would close out the game outscoring USC 4-3 to force game five, 30-25.
Game five was all UCI as the Anteaters hit a blistering .750 (9-0-12). UCI jumped out to a 6-2 lead with the only Trojan points coming from UCI service errors. Kevin Wynne would put down the game winner 15-9.
