Division I Head Coaches Committee Meeting Minutes

Wednesday, August 1, 2012

11:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. (EST)

Call led by Kevin Hambly, Division I Representative, University of Illinois

1.  Update on Moving Start of Season (Kathy DeBoer)

During the last committee call in June Kathy discussed an alternative to the current beginning and ending dates of the volleyball season. Kathy explained the idea was to back-up the entire volleyball season by two weeks so that preseason would start in late July, the first date of competition would be played in mid August (2 weeks after preseason begins) and the national championship would be played the first or second week of December. The goal of making this change is to increase the attention given to the national championship so that it doesn't get lost in the shuffle with the end of football season and beginning of basketball season.

Kathy suggested the championship could be played with the semifinals on Sunday and the finals on Tuesday which is the format used by women's basketball. This would keep the championship off the primary college football playing days and the premier basketball weekend games.

Kathy presented this idea to the NCAA on June 4. NCAA staff has taken the idea to ESPN and the Volleyball Committee for feedback. ESPN has yet to offer their input so there has been no movement since the June conference call.

2.  AVCA College Volleyball Showcase Update (Kathy DeBoer)

This year the AVCA College Volleyball Showcase will feature a Chinese club volleyball team (Jiangsu) that will travel to the United States to play six matches in late August/early September. The six matches will be played against USC, UCLA, Pepperdine, Arizona, Stanford and California. The Pac-12 network will televise four of these matches. Kathy noted this trip could potentially lead to more opportunities for Chinese club volleyball teams to compete in the United States.

3.  Transfer Rate Information (Kathy DeBoer)

The NCAA has compiled transfer rate information from 2009 - 2011 for all men's and women's sports. Kevin will send the data out to all DI AVCA member head coaches.

4.  Recruiting Task Force Update  (Tonya Johnson)

Tonya reported a letter was sent to the NCAA Presidential Working Group on rules deregulation regarding the two rules changes that will have the most significant impact on college volleyball coaches:

1) Elimination of Quiet Periods - the current dead periods will remain in place but contact at any other time is permissible. Coaches will keep the same 80 days currently in place.

2) Elimination of College Coaches Working with Clubs - college coaches would not be allowed to work for a club in any capacity. An exception would be made for college coaches working with non-prospect age kids.

The letter gave support to keeping May as a quiet period and also made the group aware of the negative financial impact the club coaching ban would have on many college coaches. Kevin will send the letter out to all DI AVCA member head coaches.

5.  Marketing Sub-Committee Update (Jamie Gordon)

Jamie reported he has contacted Mary Eiland at the NCAA to request assistance with a marketing plan that can be sent to the top 40 - 50 programs to help push attendance at NCAA first and second round matches. There is also discussion on how to implement cross marketing opportunities with schools geographically situated near host institutions. For example, if Kentucky was a host school how could Morehead St. and other schools nearby assist in driving attendance.

6.  Sand Volleyball Sub-Committee Update (Kathy DeBoer)

Kathy said the sand committee and sand selection committee have been conducting regular calls to discuss ways to improve the sport and sand championship. A location for the 2013 championship has not yet been determined. The date for the championship has been moved back a week to the first week in May to allow teams to complete a full season. Kevin will send out a list of schools already participating in sand volleyball or considering participation.

7.  New Group - Women/Family/Life Balance and Coaching (Arlisa Williams)

Arlisa reported a new group has been established to support women coaches who are seeking to balance family/life with work commitments. The goal of the group is to find ways to keep women in coaching by offering recommendations based on success stories from female coaches doing both successfully. Anyone interested in participating in the group should contact Arlisa at or Kevin at

8.  AVCA Update (Jason Jones)

AVCA Convention registration will open on August 15. The convention will be held December 12 - 16 in Louisville, Kentucky. Convention hotel blocks will open on August 15 as well. More information on hotel rates, registration pricing packages and a preliminary schedule can be found by clicking here.

All AVCA member head coaches should receive the annual salary survey during the first week of September. This year the salary survey has been combined with the programs benefits survey so coaches will only need to complete one survey. Jason asked the committee to please encourage their conference coaches to participate.
