III.          Reports

                                1. General AVCA information update

Registration is still open for the 2013 AVCA Spring Conference East/West events. Spring Conference East is scheduled for April 26-28 on the campus of MIT in conjunction with the NCAA Men's Division III Championship. Spring Conference West is scheduled for May 2-4 on the campus of UCLA and the Westin LA Airport in conjunction with the NCAA Division I-II Men's Championship.

Both Spring Conference events will feature on-court and classroom presentations from  Al Scates and Mike Hebert, including an entire day of in-depth analysis on both attacking and program development. Additional sessions will be offered led by renowned coaches from all levels of the game.

Group registration rates are available. More information found here: http://avca.org/2013-sc-east-west/index.cfm

                                2. AVCA Awards - procedural change

Basically, the main difference will be in the All-Region selection.  In the past we had All-Region committees, but now we're looking to set it up so every coach in the region votes for the All-Region Teams.

Each coach would receive a link where they can view all of the nominees in their region only, and they'll select a Region Coach of the Year and 14 total winners which will be broken up by position:  five outside hitters/right sides, three middle blockers, two setters, one libero and three at-large.

A coach will not be able to vote for their own players, and a coach has to vote in order for their program's nominees to be considered.   If they don't vote, their student-athletes won't be on the All-Region Team and subsequently any of the All-American teams.  We talked to a handful of different coaches associations who did it this way and they all had higher than 90% participation rate.

This is going into effect this fall 2013. We are open to any and all feedback. We have had extensive conversations with our current awards chairs and other coaches associations who use this model.

                B. Jim

1. Information from the Championships Committee (see attached file)

a.   Selection Criteria - re-worded to add the word "quality"...5 criteria plus 3 additional criteria selected by the VB Committee - starts August 2015.

b.   Misconduct policy and fine structure.

c.   Regionalization Map and the Mountain East Conference in the Atlantic Region starting this upcoming fall.  Including Ohio in the region, which they did not last fall.

                - Doug: NCAA told GMAC would expand Midwest to Tennessee.  Puts them at three conferences in all eight regions.

                                2. Sports Club legislation - see attachment

                                                a. Kathleen working on NCAA thoughts on this for Div. II/III

-Not gotten a lot of feedback.  Is on the radar for the June discussion of the legislation committee.  Will discuss then if the interpretation applies to DII.

-Trying to get educational column out.

-Right now DII is in a holding pattern.

-Kathy DeBoer:  Think 50% of DI programs are in violation of rules.  Volleyball is not alone in this issue.  Main issue is what is the interpretation?  The legislation is written very similarly in DII as is Division I.

-Will be an impact across the board.

                                3. Old topics

                                                a. February 15th date - email from Kathleen clarifying the rule

-From start of 2nd semester to Feb. 15th, full team practice two hours a week.

                C. Kathleen Brasfield

1. Update on Summer workouts with strength and conditioning staff (this is a Division II issue not just VB)...feedback from the HCC? (see the attachment)

-Football coaches initiated conversation, but it's not just a football issue, it's an entire Fall sport issue.

-Please send Kathleen feedback by the end of March - spread the word to all conference coaches!

-Lee: Has to be one strength and conditioning coach for each sport.

-Sarah:  No one sport has one strength coach.  Do teams with designated strength coaches have an advantage?

-Kathleen:  This is part of the conversation.  Just can't have one strength coach for one sport, so a volleyball coach can't be designated a strength coach.  There is discussion for a certification that must be completed for a strength coach.
