Division I Head Coaches Committee Meeting Minutes

Wednesday, August 7, 2013

11:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. (EST)

Call led by Lyndsey Oates, Division I Representative, University of Northern Colorado

1.      AVCA Advocacy Issues (Anne Kordes & Kathy DeBoer)

Kathy updated the committee on an advocacy position the AVCA has taken with the Department of Education on the counting of male practice players for Equity in Athletics Disclosure Act (EADA) purposes. The current EADA user's guide directs institutions to record male practice players as females. Counting these males as females distorts an individual team's count, isn't transparent for any inexperienced person looking at the information, and could lead to a mistaken impression that an institution is in compliance with the proportionality prong of Title IX.  The AVCA has taken the position that no student-athlete of one gender should be listed in the count for another gender. Kathy noted the AVCA remains in support of males serving as practice players.

Anne discussed the importance of head coaches working with the media to promote their program and the sport. Some coaches get frustrated from a lack of media coverage and others get annoyed with it because they get a lot of coverage. Regardless which end of the spectrum a program falls it is important for coaches to cooperate with the media as that should be considered one of their responsibilities. Kathy noted the NCAA is working on a list of requirements for the NCAA Championships and one of those requirements will be that coaches of final four teams must participate in various media events. In the championships of other NCAA sports there are few media requirements for the first and second round, it gets heavier in the regionals and all media events require coach participation at the final four. Kathy expects similar requirements for volleyball. The NCAA can only make media requirements at their events so league and school events would not be included.

2.  Regional awards feedback from e-mail two weeks ago (Lyndsey Oates)

Lyndsey asked the committee if they had received any feedback from the regional awards e-mail that was sent out in July. Lyndsey noted she had received only a few comments. No one on the committee mentioned receiving any major complaints or issues that needed to be addressed.

3.  Marketing Sub-Committee Update (Jaime Gordon)

No report this month. Coaches are encouraged to contact Jaime at j.gordon@moreheadstate.edu if they have any issues or questions they would like the sub-committee to discuss.

4.  Recruiting Task Force Update (Jason Jones for Matt Ginipro)

Matt was not able to make the call but asked Jason to report the RTF is still waiting for NCAA legislation to begin moving forward before addressing any issues. The RTF is prepared to begin working on the recruiting calendar and recruiting communication dates/methods when the NCAA finalizes that legislation. Matt encouraged coaches to contact him with any issues they would like the RTF to address at ginipromj@appstate.edu.

5.  AVCA Update (Jason Jones)

AVCA Convention registration will open on August 14. The convention will be held December 18 - 22 in Seattle, Washington. Convention hotel blocks will open on August 14 as well. More information on hotel rates as well as registration packages and pricing can be found by clicking here

All AVCA member head coaches should receive the annual salary survey during the first week of August. Jason asked the committee to please encourage their conference coaches to participate. It was noted that only those coaches that participate will receive the survey results.

Coaches will receive an e-mail with the pre-season packets within the next two weeks. Coaches are asked to please forward that e-mail to your SID.

College coaches that have high school seniors committed to their program were asked to contact that player's high school coach and encourage the coach to recommend their player for the 2013 Under Armour Watch List. Players that are on the Under Armour Watch List can then be nominated for the Under Armour High School All-American Team. In addition, the media often includes the player being on the Under Armour All-America Watch List when writing stories or press releases on college commitments so it is positive exposure for the player and school. The high school coach must be an active AVCA member in order to make a recommendation. The deadline for recommendations is October 1. Recommendations can be made by clicking here.
