IPFW Upsets No. 15 Lewis
Fort Wayne, Ind. - To a man, everyone on the IPFW men's volleyball team will admit this has not been the season that they envisioned after reaching the National Championship Match in 2007.
But, those in attendance at the Mastodons' weekly press luncheon also believed that they could make a run at the MIVA conference tournament and possible get back to the National Semifinals for a third straight season. They stressed that winning a pair of matches this weekend would get them on their way.
After sweeping Mercyhurst on Friday night, IPFW upset No. 15 Lewis on Saturday night by the final of, 3-1.
The Mastodons won by the scores of 30-27, 30-24, 27-30, and 30-22.
IPFW rode the hot hitting of senior opposite Jason Yhost for the first two games and relied on two-time NCAA All-America C.J. Macias to take them the rest of the way in the fourth.
Yhost finished the night with a match-high 20 kills and 13 digs. Yhost also had three service aces and hit .343.
After a quiet first two games, Macias came on to finish with 16 kills, while slugging .577. He also had eight digs and two block assists.
Senior outside hitter Brock Ullrich also put down double-digit kills with 14. He fired off one of IPFW's six aces in the match and chipped in a pair of block assists.
Senior setter Graydon Ainsworth dished out 55 assists, dug up eight balls, and had three block assists.
Sophomore libero Matt Pliske had his usual steady performance on the back line with 10 digs.
Lewis, who was denied their 20th win on the season (19-8, 6-4 MIVA) was led by Drew Pickering's 16 kills. Senior Jared Dayton added 15 in the loss.
With the win, IPFW improves to 12-11 overall and 5-6 in the MIVA.
The Mastodons will host No. 10 Ohio State on Tuesday night at 7:00 p.m.
This is the make-up of the match that was cancelled back on March 8 due to blizzard conditions in Columbus, Ohio.
