DIII No. 5 Ramapo Defeats No. 6 Stevens, Falls to No. 3 Vassar in NECVA Tourney

Mahway, N.J. - The No. 5 seeded Ramapo College men's volleyball team recorded a 3-2 (30-27, 28-30, 30-23, 27-30, 15-13) victory over the No. 4 seeded Ducks of the Stevens Institute of Technology today in a quarter-final match-up at the Bradley Center.

With the win the Roadrunners advanced to play the No. 1 seeded Brewers of Vassar College in the semi-finals where they fell short, 0-3 (25-30, 21-30, 26-30).

Junior Shane Donohue (Freehold, NJ) recorded a team high 24 kills on 44 attempts with four errors hitting .455 to lead the Roadrunners to their victory over Stevens. Senior opposite Brendan Whitford (Lyndhurst, NJ) posted 20 kills and Tom Kohler (East Brunswick, NJ) pounded down 14.

Rookie Jeff Elsasser (Barnegat, NJ) and junior TC Elsasser (Barnegat, NJ) combined for 21 kills in the match. Jairo Sierra (Fair Lawn, NJ) dished out a team high 71 assists and defensive specialist Dan Sempkowski (East Brunswick, NJ) led the way with 15 digs. Donohue and Whitford each tallied double-double in the match-up with 12 and 13 digs respectively. Kohler blocked six total balls and T. Elsasser added five. Ramapo hit .326 with 85 kills combined over Steven's .293 with 73 kills.

In Ramapo's final match of the day, they dropped a tough, 0-3 (25-30, 21-30, 26-30) decision to the No. 1 seeded Brewers of Vassar College. Kohler led the team hitting .550 with 12 kills on 20 attempts and only one error. Donohue added nine kills and Whitford added seven.

Sierra dished out 49 assists and recorded four digs and four total blocks while Elvis Cabrera recorded five kills on eight attempts for a .625 hitting percentage. Ramapo hit .298 with 44 kills for the match. Ramapo wraps up their 2008 season at 29-6 overall.
