SVCC Conference Call Minutes
The call started at 4:00 p.m. ET; 1:00 p.m. PT
Committee Members Present: Nina Matthies, Chair (Pepperdine), Anna Collier (USC), Jason Kepner (CoC), Steve Loeswick (UNF), Danalee Corso (FSU)
AVCA Staff: Kathy DeBoer (ED)
Kathy DeBoer gave the committee a brief overview of the 2014 AVCA National Championship ‘letter of intent' participation and post-championship participant survey as an introduction to the discussion of format changes for the 2015 championship, scheduled for May 1-3 in Gulf Shores, AL. The committee also reviewed the list of programs that have either announced or anticipate fielding a team in the spring of 2015.
The championship format discussion ended with the following recommendations:
Team Championship Format: 8 team double-elimination tourney on Friday, May 1 and Saturday, May 2 with a sudden-death final, i.e. if the team in the winner's bracket loses the championship match, there will not be a second match.
Pairs Championship Format: 16 pairs will compete on Sunday, May 3 in a single elimination draw. 10 places in the field will come from the #1 pair from each of the schools in the team championship and the #2 pair from the two finalists. The other 6 places will be determined by a single match play-in on Saturday afternoon between the top three pool finishers of the 10 best-of-the-rest duos against the #2 teams from the other six schools in the team championship. The pool winners will play the #2's from the 7th and 8th finishing teams; the third place pool pairs will play the #2's from the semi-finalists teams; the pool runner-ups with match up w/ the 5th and 6th teams #2 pairs
AVCA will connect with the Gulf Shores local organizing committee to determine the feasibility of adding two courts to the footprint for the collegiate championship.
The committee postponed any decisions on the distribution of the two new bids until there was more certainty about the number and location of new varsity programs in 2015.
Results of the 2014 Sand VB survey were distributed to the committee and are attached to these minutes.
The final discussion involved a debate about the upsides and downsides of the two-week window at the beginning of the season for line-up shifts of more than one position. The prevailing arguments were that since the season is only 8 weeks long, and matches with ramifications for the AVCA National Championship are routinely played in the first two weeks that line-up shifts should be limited to one position up or one position down from the 1st day of the season. This change will be highlighted repeatedly prior to the start of the 2015 season and the committee will, on a subsequent call, discuss the penalty for noncompliance.
CWA has recommended that Sand VB be added as an NCAA Championship sport in the next budget cycle (2015-2018)/ The NCAA championship staff is developing a budget and is using the sand committee as an advisory group. The first call was June 16. Once formulated, the budget will be forwarded to the NCAA groups that evaluate requests and bring funding recommendations to the membership for a vote. Since Sand VB will be a national collegiate championship, all three divisions must vote on the recommendation, likely in January of 2015.
The call concluded at 5:15 p.m. Minutes transcribed by Kathy DeBoer
