COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (May 4, 2005) - The American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) is pleased to announce Pepperdine University senior outside hitter Sean Rooney has been selected as the 2005 AVCA Division I-II National Player of the Year for men's volleyball.

Rooney ranks second nationally among NCAA Division I-II players in points per game with 6.35 while hitting .395 on the season. He has extended his consecutive double-digit kill match streak to 50 matches, while averaging 1.46 digs and 0.49 aces per game. Rooney has totaled 20 or more kills in 14 matches, including two 30-plus kill contests in 2005. He hit .407 against nationally ranked teams over the course of 78 games during the regular season. He contributed a double-double of 22 kills and 10 blocks versus Long Beach State on Jan. 27. Rooney currently ranks seventh among Division I-II student-athletes in aces per game.

Rooney is a four-time AVCA All-American and only the seventh male student-athlete to achieve such an honor. He has earned AVCA Division I-II All-America First-Team selection each of the past three seasons and is only the eighth player to be named first team three times. Pepperdine won the MPSF regular season with a 20-2 league record and claimed the MPSF Tournament championship. The Waves are 23-2 overall and seeded first in this week's NCAA National Collegiate Men's Volleyball Championship. Pepperdine has been ranked tops in USA Today/CSTV Top 15 Division I-II Men's Coaches Poll six times this season. The Waves have won six straight matches heading into the national semifinals, in addition to a 15-match win streak posted between Jan. 21 and March 25 this year. Pepperdine is 18-2 against teams currently ranked in the national poll.

Formal presentation of the AVCA All-America and National Player of the Year awards were made Wednesday, May 4, at the NCAA Men's Volleyball National Championship Banquet in Los Angeles on the UCLA campus.
