No. 12 Southern California Sweeps Pacific
Los Angeles, Calif. - Murphy Troy had 18 kills and Juan Figueroa added 17 kills to lead the No. 12-ranked USC men's volleyball team to a 30-28, 30-16, 31-29 win over Pacific in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match on Friday (March 28) at USC's Galen Center.
USC improved to 11-13 overall and 8-10 in the MPSF, while Pacific fell to 4-19 and 1-16.
Figueroa hit .520 overall and teammate Austin Zahn hit .769 with 10 kills, while Tri Bourne had 10 digs and Hunter Current had 8 kills, 5 digs and 4 blocks.
For Pacific, Pekka Seppanen had 17 kills, 5 digs and 3 blocks.
The Trojans outhit Pacific, .450 to .224.
USC fought back from a 28-26 deficit in the first game by scoring 4 unanswered points, the last being Troy's 11th kill of the game. The Trojans jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the second game and steadily pulled away while hitting .654. In the third game, USC overcame a 26-23 deficit by scoring 3 points in a row and then, with the score tied at 29-29, a pair of kills by Troy ended the match.
USC concludes its 2008 home schedule when it hosts No. 6 Stanford on Saturday (March 29) at 5 p.m. in the Galen Center (the MPSF match was originally set for 7 p.m.).
