Santa Barbara, Calif. - Junior opposite Paul Carroll had 19 kills and five service aces to lead the #5 Pepperdine men's volleyball team to a 30-23, 30-25, 35-33 victory at #13 UC Santa Barbara in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation action on Saturday night in Robertson Gymnasium.

It was the final road match of the 2008 regular season for the Waves, who improved to 9-8 overall and 9-8 in the MPSF. Pepperdine ended a three-match losing streak, all to teams that were ranked #2 in the nation at the time. UCSB dropped to 8-12, 6-10.

Freshman outside hitter Cory Riecks (Auburn, Calif./Placer HS) added 14 kills, senior setter Jonathan Winder (Irvine, Calif./Woodbridge HS) had 43 assists and freshman middle blocker Tyler Jaynes (Granite Bay, Calif./Granite Bay HS) had 10 blocks and five kills.

"We did a good job coming back in game three," Pepperdine Coach Marv Dunphy said. "Give Santa Barbara credit, they played well, and we had to play well."

The Waves got off to a good start in game one by scoring the first three points. They later had a 12-10 lead before scoring four straight points, two on service aces by Carroll. UCSB got no closer than four points the rest of the game.

The Gauchos jumped out to a big lead in game two, going up 7-2. The Waves came back, however, as consecutive aces by Winder cut the lead to 9-8. A kill and two straight blocks by Jaynes tied the score at 11-11. Pepperdine took its first lead on Carroll's service ace, making it 14-13. It was 24-22 when the Waves scored the next four points, and Jaynes was in on two more blocks. The Waves ended game two on a Carroll kill.

It was tied 5-5 in game three when the Gauchos put down five straight kills. Pepperdine pulled within one point at 16-15, and came within one point on six other occasions, but it seemed like the Gauchos would send the match to a game four. UCSB had game point at 29-27, but Pepperdine scored three straight points - a kill by Jaynes, a block by Jaynes and Riecks and a kill by Carroll - to prolong game three and take a 30-29 lead. The teams traded points until back-to-back kills by Carroll and junior outside hitter J.D. Schleppenbach (Ventura, Calif./Ventura HS) ended the match.

Carroll and Riecks combined for 15 of Pepperdine's 23 kills in game three.

Pepperdine outhit UCSB .345 to .278 and had a 12-6 blocking edge.

The Waves finish the regular season with six consecutive home matches, beginning with a non-conference contest against California Baptist next Saturday (March 22) at 7 p.m.
