No. 3 Long Beach State Defeats IPFW In Classic Opener
Long Beach, Calif. - Paul Lotman had 22 kills and Adam Schlesinger had a career-high 16 as the third-ranked Long Beach State men's volleyball team defeated IPFW 30-26, 30-22, 26-30, 30-23 on Friday evening at the Active Ankle/Long Beach GuestHouse Classic at the Walter Pyramid. Long Beach improves to 17-2 overall with the win while the Mastadons fall to 8-8.
Long Beach State hit an impressive .446 in the match as Lotman hit .348, Schlesinger .444 and Dan Alexander .588. Alexander was the third 49er in double digits with 11 kills. Fletcher Anderson and Josh Riley both added eight kills. The eight kills by Riley represented a career-high for him.
Setter Mike Klipsch guided the 49er offense and finished with 45 assists. Long Beach had seven aces in the match, but had 26 service errors. Defensively, Dustin Watten garnered 12 digs, his eighth match this season with double figures in digs.
C.J. Macias led IPFW with 12 kills and four aces, Josh Stewart added 11 kills and four blocks and Jason Yhost had 10 kills. IPFW hit .223 (54-27-121) in the match and also had seven aces.
The 49ers trailed 23-20 in game one before staging a rally. Long Beach went up 26-25 and then earned a point when an IPFW blocker interfered with Klipsch's set. IFPW Head Coach Arnie Ball took exception to the call and received a yellow card, giving the 49ers another point and a 28-25 lead. The 49ers won the game 30-26 as Lotman had eight kills and the 49ers hit .344 (15-4-32).
Game two save the 49ers break away from a 10-10 tie with a 9-3 run to grab a 19-13 advantage. IPFW had six service errors in game two and the 49ers hit .364 (11-3-22), winning 30-22.
The Mastadons rallied in game three, leading wire-to-wire. IPFW went up 7-2, pushed the lead to 17-7 and held on for a 30-26 win. IPFW hit .417 (13-3-24) in the game. The 49ers came out in game four and pushed a 21-18 lead to 24-18, en route to a 30-23 win.
In the first match of the night, Penn State (20-1), ranked fourth in the country, defeated Cal Baptist 30-21, 30-27, 30-26. Matt Anderson had 17 kills, Max Lpisitz 12 and Max Holt 11 as PSU hit .371 (53-17-97) in the match. Yukai Sun and Donald Baliaba led Cal Baptist (9-8) with 10 kills apiece.
Saturday will see IPFW and Cal Baptist playing at 5 pm, followed at 7 pm by Long Beach State and Penn State.
