No. 4 Long Beach Beats No. 7 Stanford In Three Games
Long Beach, Calif. - The fourth-ranked Long Beach State men's volleyball team made quick work of seventh-ranked Stanford on Friday night, defeating the Cardinal 30-28, 30-23, 30-27 in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) match in the Walter Pyramid. Paul Lotman led the 49ers (15-2, 11-2 MPSF) with 18 kills and Dean Bittner added 12.
Long Beach hit .290 in the victory, but recorded a season-high 13 service aces in the match. Lotman and Tommy Pestolesi both had three aces, while Bittner and Dan Alexander registered two apiece. Alexander added seven kills and a .429 hitting percentage to the cause, while setter Mike Klipsch had 40 assists and five digs. Defensively, Dustin Watten led the 49ers with 11 digs, as the 49ers out-dug the Cardinal 30-to-25.
Sophomore Evan Romero led the Cardinal (13-7, 8-7 MPSF) with 18 kills. Spencer McLachlin had eight kills and three blocks and Matt Ceran chipped in with seven kills. The Cardinal hit .240 (41-18-96) in the match and had just three aces, compared to 14 service errors.
Game one saw the 49ers bounce back from an early 10-8 deficit with a 5-0 run, highlighted by three consecutive aces by Pestolesi, to take a 13-10 lead. The 49ers hit .276 in game one and Lotman led the way with six kills as Long Beach won 30-28. Game two saw the 49ers use a 9-4 run to expand a 17-16 lead to 26-20. The 49ers hit .344 (17-6-32) in the game. In game three, the 49ers trailed 16-15, but went on a 7-1 run to take command of the game, 22-17.
The 49ers will next be in action on Wednesday, March 12 when they play at UC San Diego.
