1996 AVCA Division I National Player of the Year

Cleveland, Ohio - The American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) are pleased to announce Angelica Ljungquist of the University of Hawai'i has been named the Division I National Player of the Year.

Ljungquist is one of only six student-athletes to be named to the AVCA All-America Team for all four seasons.

This season Ljungquist has led the Rainbow Wahine to the NCAA semifinals for the first time since 1988. They take on Florida in the first semifinal, to be held Dec. 20 at 6 p.m at the Cleveland State Convocation Center.

On the year, Hawai`i claimed titles at the NACWAA State Farm Classic, Aston's Imua and the Wahine Classic. Ljungquist was selected tournament MVP at each of the three tournaments.

This season, she has recorded 537 kills, 298 digs, 229 blocks, 55 aces and a .428 hitting percentage. In 117 games played this season, she averages 4.59 kills, 2.55 digs, 1.96 blocks and .47 aces per game. Ljungquist recorded her sixth career triple-double in the Western Athletic Conference championship match against BYU with 27 kills, 17 digs and 11 blocks.

Ljungquist became Hawai`i's all-time career block assists leader after recording her record-breaking 503 career block assists, Oct. 11, versus Wyoming. She currently has 616 block assists. She is second in total blocks with 726 and third in block solos with 110. Ljungquist also ranks first in the Rainbow Wahine record books with a .378 career hitting percentage. She ranks third in all-time kills (1,548), fourth in aces (130) and seventh in digs (938).

She is not only a phenomenal athlete, Ljungquist also excels in the classroom, earning GTE/Co-SIDA Academic All-American Second-Team honors, the first-ever Hawai`i volleyball player to earn such an honor.

The formal presentation of her award will be made Dec. 20, 1996, in Cleveland, Ohio, at the AVCA Player of the Year/All-America brunch beginning at 9:30 a.m. The brunch, which will take place at the Renaissance Cleveland Hotel, is held in conjunction with the 1996 AVCA National Convention.
