West Texas A&M's Debbie Hendricks Named 1997 Tachikara/AVCA Division II National Coach of the Year

Colorado Springs, Colo. - The American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA), in conjunction with Tachikara, is proud to announce that Debbie Hendricks of West Texas A&M University has been selected as the 1997 Tachikara/AVCA Division II National Coach of the Year.

Hendricks led the Buffaloes (37-3) to their third national championship in their first national quarterfinal appearance since 1992.  West Texas A&M held down a top five spot in the AVCA Coaches Top 25 poll for the majority of the season.  On the year, the squad earned wins over nationally-ranked Barry, Cal State Bakersfield, North Alabama, Central Missouri State, Colorado Christian, Cal Poly Pomona and Northern Colorado.

Hendricks has compiled a 134-40 record in five seasons at West Texas A&M, including a current 18-match winning streak.  The 1997 Lone Star Coach of the Year led the Buffaloes to the national championship with just two seniors on the roster.

Tachikara will formally present the Coach of the Year awards on Thursday, Dec. 18, 1997, in Spokane, Wash at the Tachikara/AVCA Coach of Year banquet.  The luncheon, which will begin at noon at the Spokane Doubletree City Center, is held in conjunction with the 1997 AVCA National Convention.
