La Jolla, Calif. - The UC San Diego men's volleyball team swept its first-ever Mountain Pacific Sports Federation member in a 30-27, 30-22, 30-24 win over No. 12 UC Santa Barbara on Friday night in RIMAC Arena. It was also just the second win for the Tritons against the Gauchos in 34 total meetings.

With the win, UCSD improves to 5-12, 2-10 MPSF, while the Gauchos drop to 7-9, 5-7 MPSF. The Tritons hit at a .420 clip, compared to UCSB's .244 percentage.

Frank Fritsch led all players with 17 kills on .520 hitting, while Jason Spangler added 12 kills on .500 hitting. Phil Bannan recorded three aces to go along with his 40 assists.

Also for the Tritons, Russ Hardy added nine kills and three blocks while Calvin Ross chipped in with six kills and three blocks.

UCSB was led by Theo Brunner with 14 kills, while Jeff Menzel added 13 kills.

The first game was the closest of the night, with six ties. UCSD took a 20-18 lead after Hardy sent down a kill. With a 21-20 lead, the Tritons scored four straight points to extend the lead to 25-20. UCSB came back within three points at 29-26, but it was too late as Fritsch sent down the game ender at 30-27 UCSD.

With the Tritons leading 21-18 in game two, UCSB cut the deficit down to 22-21 after a Triton attack error. At 23-22 UCSD, the Tritons scored the final seven points of the game, the last on an ace by Bannan to take the game at 30-22.

UCSD scored seven of the first 10 points in the third game, only to see UCSB storm back and tie the game at 9-9. The Tritons scored the next four points, the final on a Ross kill to go ahead 13-9. UCSB got as close as three points at 24-21, but three consecutive kills by Fritsch ended any chance for a Gaucho comeback. Fritsch would also have the match ender at 30-24 UCSD.

UCSD is back in action tomorrow night when it hosts Cal State Northridge. First serve is set for 7:00 p.m. in RIMAC Arena.
