AVCA Division I Region Coaches of the Year

AVCA Division I East Region Coach of the Year
Chris Poole, Florida State University
2014 Record: 30-2, 16-2 Atlantic Coast Conference

Florida State is no stranger to success under the leadership of Chris Poole. After leading his team to a 16-2 record in the strong Atlantic Coast Conference, the Seminoles swept the first two matches of their school-record seventh consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance, and their 16th overall. Poole has done a marvelous job of helping his team come together, as they opened pre-season training with nine newcomers on the roster. The collection of talent led the ACC by placing six players on All-ACC rosters, including senior libero Katie Mosher (first team) and freshman RS Milica Kubura (All-Freshman).  Heading into the Round of 16, FSU has tallied six straight sweeps.  This is the fourth AVCA DI Region Coach of the Year award for Poole (1997, 2009, 2011).

AVCA Division I East Coast Region Coach of the Year
Allison Yaeger, Seton Hall University
2014 Record: 28-8, 15-3 BIG EAST Conference
In her third year at the helm of the Pirates, she led her squad to their first ever NCAA Tournament berth in an historic 2014 campaign. Their 28 overall and 15 BIG EAST victories were both most in program history. Their previous conference victory high was eight. Another first for SHU was receiving votes in the AVCA Coaches Poll back on November 24th. For their tremendous season, Yaeger and her assistants won the BIG EAST Conference Coaching Staff of the Year. She is now a first-time AVCA Region Coach of the Year winner.

AVCA Division I Midwest Region Coach of the Year
Tim Horsmon, University of Dayton
2014 Record: 30-6, 13-1 Atlantic 10 Conference
After returning to Dayton this season, Horsmon wasted no time in establishing his program as a winning one. Previously, he served as the Flyers head coach from 2003-2007 and spent the last six seasons at the University of Maryland. His 30 overall wins were the most in the Atlantic 10 on their way to winning the conference for their fourth time in five years. The 2014 A-10 Coach of the Year mentored three players who made first-team all-conference, including individual honors for Alaina Turner (Player of the Year), Janna Krafka (Libero of the Year) and Jane Emmenecker (Setter of the Year). This is Horsmon's second AVCA Region Coach of the Year honor after winning in 2007.

AVCA Division I North Region Coach of the Year
Melissa Myers, Illinois State University
2014 Record: 27-6, 18-0 Missouri Valley Conference

Melissa Myers, in her seventh season at the helm of the Redbird volleyball program, guided the team to its best season during her tenure. Her 2014 team won the program's first MVC regular-season title in 17 years and recorded a 23-match winning streak, the longest winning streak in school history. The Redbirds set multiple school records for matches and sets won consecutively, all while winning their first Missouri Valley Conference regular-season and tournament titles since 1997. The Redbirds won just their third NCAA Tournament match in school history this season, and the program's first away from Redbird Arena. This award marks her first AVCA DI Region Coach of the Year award.

AVCA Division I Northeast Region Coach of the Year
Kelly Sheffield, University of Wisconsin
2014 Record: 30-2, 18-1 Big Ten Conference

Sheffield led the Badgers to the Big Ten Championship in only his second year on the bench. Wisconsin went from a 5-15 mark in 2012, finishing 10th, to a 12-8 record and tie for fourth place in Sheffield's first season in 2013.  Wisconsin won a school record 19 straight Big Ten matches this season, tying a school record for the best conference record at 19-1. Under his guidance, Wisconsin pulled off a near-sweep of the major Big Ten awards. In addition to Sheffield being named as the Big Ten Coach of the Year, sophomore Lauren Carlini was recognized as the Big Ten Player of the Year and Setter of the Year, and junior Taylor Morey was recognized as the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year. This is the second AVCA DI Region Coach of the Year award for Sheffield, which he also won as the head coach at Dayton in 2010.

AVCA Division I Pacific North Region Coach of the Year
Terry Liskevych, Oregon State University
2014 Record: 21-12, 9-12 Pac-12 Conference
In one of the best seasons in program history, head coach Terry Liskevych has led his team to places many didn't consider at the start of the year. This is the program's first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2001 coming off last year's last place conference finish with just nine total wins. In the NCCA's, Oregon State has defeated Creighton and Arkansas-Little Rock, and will play conference foe Stanford in the Round of 16. They finished the regular season ranking second in the deep Pac-12 in digs per set (16.77) and third in blocks per set (2.60) and service aces per set (1.23). This is his first AVCA Region Coach of the Year award.

AVCA Division I Pacific South Region Coach of the Year
Shawn Olmstead, Brigham Young University
2014 Record: 27-4, 16-2 West Coast Conference
There are few programs that have enjoyed the amount of success in recent years as BYU Head Coach Shawn Olmstead. 2014 marks the program's third consecutive appearance in the NCAA Tournament Regional Semifinals. They won the West Coast Conference outright with 16 conference wins, and picked up his second WCC Coach of the Year honor (co-Coach of the Year with Pacific's Greg Gibbons). He guided a total of three of his players to all-conference honors, including Player of the Year Alexa Gray and Defender of the Year Whitney Young. He took home AVCA Region Coach of the Year honors in 2012, making this his second award.

AVCA Division I South Region Coach of the Year
Brandon Rosenthal, Lipscomb University
2014 Record: 21-9, 13-1 Atlantic Sun Conference
Brandon Rosenthal had the kind of season that can change expectations for a program. They made history as the first ever A-Sun team to earn an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament. Early in the season, Lipscomb knocked off then-No. 22 Kansas on the Jayhawks home court to notch the program's first victory against an AVCA ranked team in history. They were later receiving votes in the AVCA Coaches Poll for two consecutive weeks. After winning his second Atlantic Sun Conference Coach of the Year award in 2014, this marks his first AVCA Region Coach of the Year honor.

AVCA Division I Southeast Region Coach of the Year
Mary Wise, University of Florida
2014 Record: 27-3, 18-0 Southeastern Conference

2014 was another stellar season in the decorated career of Florida's Mary Wise. In addition to winning her 14th SEC Coach of the Year award, Wise led the Gators to a 24th consecutive NCAA tournament berth. With another great season under her belt, Wise currently stands as the third-winningest active DI coach, and is the only active DI female head coach to surpass the 800-win milestone, which she did when her team swept then-No.6 Southern California on September 12. During her tenure at Florida, Wise has recorded a winning percentage approaching .900, and has only lost 18 matches in SEC play since taking over the program in 1991. This year marks her 11th AVCA DI Region Coach of the Year award (1991, 1992, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2003, 2010).

AVCA Division I Southwest Region Coach of the Year
Van Compton, UALR
2014 Record: 30-5, 20-0 Sun Belt Conference
Now in her 27th season heading the UALR program, it was inarguably their best. They didn't lose a single conference match on their way to winning their first Sun Belt Conference Tournament Championship since 2000, and fifth all time. However, they didn't end there. They went on to win the program's first ever NCAA Tournament match when they defeated No. 16 seeded Kansas in five. The match also produced UALR's first set win in NCAA Tournament play. The Trojans went on to push Pac-12's Oregon State to five, entering that match with the nation's longest winning streak of 25. This honor marks Compton's first.
