Recruiting: Coaching Local Club
Teams
There is a proposal that will be reviewed during the
2005 NCAA Division I Legislative Cycle that would prohibit collegiate coaches
from coaching local sports club at off-campus competitions where prospects are
present during a quiet period.
Rationale In Support of this Proposal:
* By eliminating the opportunity for intercollegiate coaches to have any contact
with recruits, other than coaching their own teams in the club's practice
facility will level the recruiting playing field.
* This proposal would reinforce the rationale for having quiet periods which is
to enhance the quality of life for women's volleyball coaches.
* Currently, coaches are violating the recruiting legislation when they have the
ability to have contact with prospects during these quiet periods.
* This proposal would create more opportunity for non-college coaches to gain
experience.
* Under the current legislation, the ability of collegiate coaches to coach
prospects at tournaments violates the spirit of the quiet period rules and
allows for additional selective recruiting opportunities that are not available
to coaches who do not coach a club team.
Rational Opposed to this Proposal:
* Assistant coaches could possibly lose opportunities to earn outside income.
* Prospects on club teams will not have their head coach at tournaments if they
continue to compete at tournaments during the Division I quiet period.
* In the long run, this may reduce the number of club tournaments during the
times of the year when there are Division I quiet periods.
* Lack of qualified coaches in these areas will hurt the development of the
game.
NOTE: There have been numerous requests to include a limitation on
collegiate coaches employed by camps and clinics during the quiet period. The
current legislative cycle does not include a proposal that addresses this. A
collegiate conference would have to propose this legislation for future
legislative cycles.
