2014 AVCA Collegiate Sand Volleyball National Championships Information
The Gulf Shores & Orange Beach Sports Commission (GSOBSC) is set to host the
American Volleyball Coaches Association's (AVCA) Sand Volleyball National
Championships featuring the top 6 college teams in the country as well as the top
doubles teams across all schools. The championships will take place May 2 - 4 on Gulf
Shores Main Public Beach in front of The Hangout. Competing schools and individual
pairs will be announced on Monday, April 21.
Approved as an NCAA Emerging Sport for women in 2009, sand volleyball is more
popular than ever among collegiate athletes. This year the number of schools
sponsoring sand volleyball has reached 40 teams and upon budget approval will
become an official NCAA-sanctioned championship sport. As beachgoers hit the Gulf in
May, they are encouraged to watch these competitive matchups unfold among the best
collegiate sand volleyball players from coast to coast. Admission is free, and portions of
the championships will be televised at a later date by CBS Sports Network, a longstanding
sand volleyball television partner.
The City of Gulf Shores hosted the AVCA's inaugural sand championship event in 2012
with a great turnout of families, fans, locals and guests, and this year's event should
pack an even bigger punch. Per an agreement with the AVCA, GSOBSC will host the
championships through 2015.
